Modern Warfare 3 (2011)
Review
Despite being marred in controversy by the monumental fallout and highly publicised mud-slinging match between its publisher and creators, Jason West and Vince Zampella, Modern Warfare 3 is without doubt Infinity Ward’s finest hour, an apologetic, highly linear shooter that thrusts you at breakneck speed from one startlingly brilliant set piece to the next with absolute aplomb. This is console-based warfare at its best and a testament to those that remained by the series side after its flag bearers defected to rival publisher, EA.

Picking up the baton right where 2009’s record-breaking sequel left off, Infinity Ward and the newly established partner studio, Sledgehammer, sling you into a ravaged world on the cusp of a Third World War, setting you on a collision course with the villainous Russian, Makarov. While the plot is much tighter and less garbled than previous efforts (thanks, in part, to a script co-written by Casino Royale’s Paul Haggis), and the blockbuster moments so good, you’re likely to soil yourself, it’s Modern Warfare 3’s multiplayer that – as usual – steals the show.

It’s still Call of Duty at heart, but with a dazzling coat of fresh paint that focuses more heavily than ever on the idea of player progression – streak bonuses have been reined in and you now have much greater control over the perks you nab in combat thanks to the addition of Strike Packages. Modes have been fleshed out – take a bow, Kill Confirmed – Spec Ops returns with 16 new and finger-blistering objective-based missions, while Empire’s new favourite addition to an already overwhelming package is Survival Mode, Infinity Ward’s nod to the Nazi Zombie Modes in Treyarch’s take on the juggernaut series.

Both Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer have created a finale to the Makarov saga that not only outshines its predecessors, but has also become more encompassing and user-friendly than ever before. And already, we’re desperate to know where the series will go from here in the hands of both teams.

RE: Chillax...

Erm......how do you review a game if you've never played it??  That's like me saying that I find you dull and uninformed and presume you have pale skin, not many friends and live with your parents even though you are 37 years of age because I have met people who do similar things.  How close am I? ... More

RE: MASS EFFECT 3: TAKING EARTH BACK

GOOD:   -Refined and smooth gameplay. -Brilliant multilplayer with fantastic game-modes -Solid selection of guns -Fun but short single player -Customizing your player with perks, gun attachments and explosives is a blast.     BAD:   -Graphics look dated, especially compared with BF3 -Online is full of hackers who ruin games. -Not the best map selection, no stand outs -Guns are somewhat familiar. -Skill difference goes as follows: (Crap players ... More

Chillax...

I have yet to play this game, but I have played all the previous COD versions since it hit the PS3, and I have to give to it Activision, it may be the same old same old, but Modern Warfare is far superior to any of Treyarchs offerings. Treyarchs games are always shinier than Activisions, but when it comes down to it they just dont have that something special that makes you want to reply the game. Modern Warfare 4 is still an amazing game to play, as is MW2. I know the single player mode is short... More

idiotic Reviewers

What is the point in comparing Battlefield's MP with MW3? They are both entirely different offerings. BF relies heavily on team work, tactics and strategy on large maps. MW3 provides fast-paced, almost arcade style game-play on smaller maps, which can be enjoyed individually or as part of your party. I personally find MW3 to be solid, with some very welcome customisation options (e.g. kill-streak selections per class!!) and also fairly difficult with its ridiculous bullet-damage that favours cam... More

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

In terms of sales, this will definitely be game of the month and probably game of the year. However, as someone who's not that fussed about multiplayer (though I acknowledge from my limited playing of various COD entries that they do it very well), the single player isn't that great. This week I completed Uncharted 3 and MW3. MW3 took less than a day, the graphics weren't nearly as sharp as Uncharted 3 (mainly because U3 was developed solely for the PS3 and MW3 was developed primarily for the... More

L: DanTDavies why are a film magazine giving a headline review to a computer game? Nope nothing out of the ordinary there at all. By the way, any chance of an Immortals review? RE:

nderstand why Empire is wasting it's time and money on something that isn't a film. ually, Modern Warfare 3 is more a film than a game. On easier difficulties you can literally walk through the entire level without shooting anyone (because you teammates do that for you) and just enjoy the view. I think Activision Blizzard rips people off by refusing to sell MW3 for a movie ticket price. ... More

Don't understand why Empire is wasting it's time and money (which is at least partly out money as we buy the magazine) on something that isn't a film. Noticed a HUGE chunk of this month's issue had NOTHING to do with films at all. NOT. IMPRESSED. ... More

L: spideed2 As some one who plays a lot of games with no agenda or bias, and finds tribalism and side taking tiresome and dull, i can confirm that this is a great value package for your money, for any FPS fans (aside from BF3 trollers who will believe ive been paid by Activision to write the above, of course). will be playing the SP campaign and multiplayer shortly as my brother has it, so when I visit his I will see what I personally think but from his comments and my person... More

RE: Dog-sh%$

L: shtonner Agree with all negative comments above - Empire clearly has an agenda here and refuses to actually comment on which multi player is best out of BF or MWF. CLEARLY BF. Cod is bone dry. BF3 is SO awesome online. Ten times the game MW is. I don't even know anyone who bothers playing the campaign these days! Oh look another person who hasnt played the game reviewing it online. Just what we needed. And why would Empire bang on about BF3 when it was reviewing another game?  ... More

Exceptional

The SP campaign is breakneck, exiting and just about coherant. One long cutscene my arse, have any of you trollers actually played the capmpaign? Its a very new story, that ties up existing plot strands and it bally fun at that. Its also a linear but tightly constructed game that jumps betweeen sections with perfect pacing. Shames the quite frankly dull BF3 capmaign into a cocked hat. The MP is slick and well put together. Plays to different strengths to BF3, but theres definetl... More

RE: You and what army...

Believe what you want to believe and if you like it fair enough, each to their own. However when you look at metacritic and the highest user score out of all platforms is 2.4/10 (Xbox 360) then clearly something is not right with all these positive reviews. If Empire liked it fine no problem but 5 stars really? They were not at all disappointed that there was hardly any innovation when developing the game and it is practically just a big map pack with a few extra weapons? Sorry, I dont buy... More

You and what army...

Empire are just agreeing with the vast majority, nothing wrong with that. If everyone had slated the game and was showing an unusual bias we'd smell a rat but reviews have been consistently good (to great in a lot of credible cases). Get back in your holes trolls, try and be pathetic where other people can't see or hear you, the way it was meant to be. ... More
