The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction

For comic book fans, there's never been a better time to own a console. While developers were once content to churn out brainless brawlers, the recent Spider-Man 2 and Batman Begins games finally saw designers understanding what makes these heroes so compelling, allowing players to use Spidey’s agility and the Dark Knight’s stealth to save the day. The Hulk is the latest Marvel megastar to get a game worthy of his cataclysmic skills — a title that will banish all memories of 2003’s horrendous movie spin-off.

At its core, Ultimate Destruction is all about what the Jade Giant does best: breaking stuff. How about smashing the ground to create a shockwave that ripples down the street, tossing cars and pedestrians all over the city? Go for it. You can even rip a car in half and pop the two ends over your gargantuan mitts, creating a pair of makeshift gauntlets to hammer the hapless cops trying to stem your rampage.

Like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the action is staged in a living, breathing metropolis that stretches as far as the eye can see, and although there are plenty of story elements to keep you moving forward and unlocking new areas, the real fun starts when you ditch the plot and start demolishing skyscrapers and chucking cars at police helicopters. And as 95 per cent of the buildings and vehicles you see can be pulverised into dust, you could easily play Ultimate Destruction for weeks without getting any closer to the end credits.

Some toe-curlingly cheesy movies and an in-game camera that often struggles to keep up with the brisk action let the game down, but Ultimate Destruction is still a wildly enjoyable romp that allows you to experience the Green Goliath’s powers as Stan Lee and Jack Kirby intended. Hulk smash!
