Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
Review
While no-one would have complained had Ubisoft cranked out an Identikit sequel to Splinter Cell, the company’s desire to keep pushing the series forward has made it one of the most thrilling in console history. And in maintaining this momentum for the latest blast of jittery stealth action, this will go down as one of 2005’s greatest achievements.

As before, the basic idea is to infiltrate enemy bases across the globe, but this time the challenge has been ramped up. As well as keeping an eye on the light meter that shows if the hero is properly hidden in the shadows, players now have to watch a sound indicator that shows if you’re making too much noise, as well as monitoring the ambient sound that can be used to ‘cover’ loud manoeuvres.

Chaos Theory also ups the ante with a huge range of multiplayer modes, and the macho military plot is more engaging than before as your actions can change the direction the story takes — kill the person you’re meant to interrogate, for example, and you’ll have to clean up your mess — making this Tom Clancy spin-off one of the most electrifying games on the shelves.
