One-sided drama centred on the Nigerian civil war, with Bruce Willis.

A Navy S.E.A.L. unit is sent into war-torn Nigeria to rescue a doctor, but not the refugees she cares for. With a rebel militia group on their trail, they wonder if there's more to the 'refugees' than first appeared.

You're developing a drama centred on the one-sided Nigerian civil war. So what do you do?

Apparently, hire Bruce Willis, add cloying close-ups of African extras with appropriate ethnic music and ensure that your leading lady's cleavage is on show during the "dramatic" bits. At least there are plenty of guns and choppers, so not everyone will be disappointed.

Despite a final caption that criticises those who stand aside and allow evil to flourish, an overly sentimental and almost offensively optimistic ending reinforces the feeling that this is simply moral wish-fulfilment - a slick apology for US foreign policy.

I heard an amusing rumour several years ago. As the American war machine got ready to pound Afganistan and the Taliban back to the Stone Age, Bruce Willis apparently volunteered for armed service. He was apparently refused due to him being to old and instead vowed to make pro-US military films instead. He then went off to make Tears Of The Sun. I think its fantastic. Only seen it once and it was quite a while ago, but remember enjoying every minute of it. I remember some of the battle scenes being great, especially the final one towards the end. Very stirring. Bruce Willis is good as well, as the leader of the unit and who lets his conscience make many of his decisions. For £4, its a blind buy worth buying! ... More

I watched it on Channel 5 ages ago and went out and bought the DC of it the following day. I think it's superb, not quite the usual Willis tough guy role and all the better for it and it's not that bad a story (slight albeit but there is one). Monica Bellucci is her usual stunning self and the icing on the cake is Marigold from In Sickness And In Health is in it (should anybody recall him?). He was in Oz too and it bugged me for weeks who he was until it finally clicked. ... More

I thought it was a half decent stab at a war movie. The jungle environment harks back to various Vietnam war films and it's not your typical gung-ho US heroes save the day plotting. If you watch the extras you will find that some of the minor cast members actually suffered through the genocidal acts that have plagued Africa in recent times and it adds a touch of authenticity to the experience plus I thought the action scenes were perfectly well handled and exciting to boot.... More

It's pretty average.   Some good action scenes and a typically good performance by Willis but the story labours and the set pieces become too familiar. Cliched moments, patronising in laces and not enough substance to even make me fully remember the plot despite watching it only a couple of months ago.   Maybe watch it if there really is nothing else on. Definately don't buy it. ... More
