Pioneer
In too deep

Plot
Blue-collar diver Petter (Hennie) is part of a team sent to lay a new petroleum pipeline at extreme depths off the coast of Norway. But when a terrible accident hits their first dive, he begins to suspects that all is not as it should be with the project.

Review
Pioneer

A tense conspiracy thriller from Insomnia writer-director Erik Skjoldbjaerg is inspired by the race for North Sea oil and the technology of exploiting it. Following dangerous tests of depth endurance, the perspective of protagonist Aksel Hennie’s ambitious diver Petter is in question when he investigates a tragic accident. Is his mistrust delusional or is he paranoid because people are out to get him? Political chicanery and psychological mystery entwine with some stunning underwater sequences but don’t gel entirely satisfactorily. But it’s sufficiently intriguing that a Clooney-Heslov remake is already reportedly in the, er, pipeline.

Verdict
Headhunters' Hennie excels as the man caught between paranoia and menace. A spirited knuckle-crack of a thriller.
