The Rock vs rock

submit to reddit

Happily-married and the owner of a trucking company, John Matthews (Johnson) seems to have things squared-away nicely. But when his son is arrested in a drugs snatch, Matthews is forced into a tough bargain with D.A. Joanne Keeghan (Sarandon) to keep the 19 year-old from a long stretch in jail.

The trailers would have you believe this is a slam-bang action movie with Dwayne Johnson as a father helping out his jailed son by taking down a drug cartel. Do not believe the hype: it’s really an issues drama about punitive prison sentences and plea deals that occasionally slips into being an action movie. Johnson gives a thoughtful, toned-down performance, but the film’s preachy attitude to drug policy sometimes gets in the way. Still, go in expecting a nuanced thriller with chat favoured over combat, and Snitch is more than up to snuff.

While not the balls-out action movie the marketing suggests, this Rock-powered family drama is not with its moments.

But most important of all, Snitch is a far better film than its advertising suggests... and Barry Pepper gives an outstanding support performance. ... More

Snitch Snitch is an effective, efficient thriller “inspired by true events”. Yet after watching the film you get the impression “inspired” has provided license to focus more on the fictional elements and less on the factual. The true story more complex and ambiguous would struggle to fit into this simple straightforward narrative. The film explores what would a father do to save his son from 10 years in prison. If the father is Dwayne “the ... More

James White go back to school. Please.

"this Rock-powered family drama is not with its moments." "NOT WITH ITS MOMENTS?????" The curse of James White strikes again. Still, it makes for good proof-reading practise reading his news items with their grammar, spelling and punctuation hazards ... More
