Review
John Dies At The End
Literal doorknobs. Flying moustaches. A meat monster. Yes, we’re deep in the loopy horror-comedy brain of Phantasm/Bubba Ho-Tep’s Don Coscarelli, here drawing from David Wong’s suitably nutty book. Two slacker “exorcist investigators” (Chase Williamson’s Dave and Rob Mayes’ John) investigate a new street drug called Soy Sauce. The effects? Try some gonzo, inter-dimensional, supernatural weirdness, and all manner of odd powers for our heroes, who must save the world. It gets messy, but John Dies... keeps up the entertainment levels by shooting the rule book, waiting for it to reanimate and shooting it again for luck. Cultdom beckons.

Verdict
Gonzo freakiness in such doses that cult status is practically ensured.

RE: Good Fun

Two College drop outs John (Rob Mayes) and Dave (Chase Williamson) take a new mind altering drug, nicknamed 'Soy Sauce', what follows is a tale of Exploding Monsters, out of body hallucinations, dismemberment, flying killer moustaches, Hot Dogs turning into mobile phones, possessed Dogs driving Pick Up Trucks, exploding eyeballs and heads, giant killer Spiders..oh and a door handle turing into a large Penis!! ("I'M NOT OPENING THAT DOOR!")At times a mess, but mostly a totally unpredictable h... More

RE: Good Fun

Watched this tonight on Blu Ray (German release has a fantastic picture), thoroughly enjoyed it, after a few beers found myself laughing a lot. Not read the book so my prior knowledge is minimal but the film is like a David Cronenberg comedy movie, and as good as that might sound. Future cult classic? Maybe... Edit: just watching the extras... Paul Giamatti says "Naked Lunch meets Bill & Ted". So there you go. ... More

Awful Empire review! Not a mention of the book it's based on, nor how close to source this adaptation sticks!! Shocking!!! Only gripe is that the limited effects budget occassionally shows in a few shots. Otherwise, if you like Douglas Adams type, comical narration with your horror/weirdery, this film is for you! Definitely a cult hit!! Just as good as the book!!! ... More
