Identity Thief
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

submit to reddit

Plot
Con woman Diana (McCarthy) is living it up in Florida, spending recklessly and racking up minor crimes. But the identity she's using belongs to a timid professional from Denver (Bateman). When he discovers what she's done, he has to drive across America to find her and stop her.

Review
Identity Thief
Mild-mannered family man Sandy Bigelow Patterson (Jason Bateman) has his credit ripped off and his life nearly ruined by the human tornado that is con woman Diana (Melissa McCarthy). When he tries to sort out the situation, a road trip comedy ensues. At least, that was the plan. But, unfortunately, Identity Thief has been seriously short-changed by a script that struggles for laughs, relying instead on the comic dynamic of its leads and a truckload of contrivance. Add to that a plot that runs out of petrol way before the end and you’ve got the formula for a huge wasted opportunity.

Verdict
Clever premise, witless execution.

"Go get this bitch."

There are laughs, but given the reputation of its two leads, far fewer than one would hope for, and some of the gags - much like Melissa McCarthy literally does a number of times - fall flat on their face. Identity Thief is a tedious comedy fueled by an abundance of clichés. ... More

Oh dear.....

Im only about an hour into this and it is already contender for the worst film I have ever seen. I recently saw Melissa McCarthy present an episode of SNL and she was really funny and I don't think that this is necessarily her fault. Its just a terrible film! Not funny and very annoying! What the FU*K was Jason Bateman thinking taking this film. He is so much better than this! ... More

RE: Waste of Time

tity Thief (2013) From the director of 'Horrible Bosses' but alas this isn't anywhere near as good. Simple premise, a woman steals a family mans identity and maxes out his credit cards causing him all manner of issues which involve the law. This is one of those films that just didn't sit well with me, the whole idea made me feel uncomfortable right from the start. This bloke has a nice happy family life which is brought to ruins by some fat binge drinking female who you just wanna smack... More

Waste of Time

I hadn't seen much of Melissa McCarthy before this movie, but her trailers never really hit the spot. I liked her small segment in This is 40, but apart from that, I really don't get the hype around her. But a lot of people seem to enjoy her work, and Bateman is usually good for a laugh, so when I went to see this movie, I hoped to at least get something out of it... I was wrong. The story is so incredibly forced, it stopped making sense even before the two of them actually met. Now, this... More

A road movie that's all cruise-control.

So. That's the film. Planes, Trains and Automobiles, but with a fat woman instead of a fat man. McCarthy remains too consistently unlikeable for the audience to really want her to change, and Bateman never fully reaches the breaking point required for his own character's destination. The film's only saving graces are that it's frequently chucklesome, and that it's not as mean-spirited as many of its contemporaries. I can't hate it, because if Seth Gordon's not going to put in the effo... More
