Celeste (Samberg) and Jesse (Jones) fell madly in love and got married young. But now they've begun to grow apart and so decide to amicably separate. They soon discover that living without each other - and moving on - is not quite as easy as they thought...
A rom-com that skips past the first two acts of a relationship to dwell on the push-pull politics of the break-up, this mainstream mumblecore movie is a good idea in search of actual characters to play it out. We love Rashida Jones, but it’s easier to root for her than the vapid LA “trend consultant” she plays — a supposedly smart career woman reduced, in typically patronising Hollywood fashion, to little more than a quivering biological clock when her ex (the appealing but equally under-served Andy Samberg) finds love elsewhere. Celeste and Jesse aren’t even for Christmas, let alone forever.
A low-fi indie that swiftly slums into terminal feyness.
