Immortals
Tarsem's Zeus caboose

submit to reddit

Plot
King Hyperion (Rourke) seeks to free the godlike Titans and challenge the Greek gods, led by Zeus (Luke Evans). Forbidden from direct interference in human affairs, Zeus hopes that Theseus (Cavill) can save the day.

The 300 comparisons for this ultra-styled, ultra-violent Greek epic are inevitable, but this is more expansive, embracing mythology and abandoning historical fidelity in favour of flights of grotesque fancy. By some distance Tarsem’s most coherent and commercial film to date, the tale of Theseus (an impressively heroic Cavill) fighting an overwhelmingly evil force led by Rourke’s Hyperion to avoid a war in the heavens largely makes sense (unlike, say, The Cell) and the breathtaking costumes and design feel helpful rather than overwhelming (unlike, at times, The Fall). It all looks so beautiful and bizarre that odd moments will stay with you long afterwards, and while the plot feels as though it’s scissored up and patched back together in a few places, it will leave you wanting more, and optimistic about Tarsem’s Snow White.

Verdict
It won’t do anything to win over those not already partial to Tarsem’s style, but it has more than enough blood, guts and glamour to satisfy – and Cavill looks like a superman.

Prefer short reviews

They don't give away spoilers, and leave you with plenty of room to breathe when watching the movie without too many pre-conceptions. Also, shorter reviews don't look like they're being written to suck up to pretentious twats. My golden rule is the longer the Empire review, the more over-rated the movie probably is. This review is just fine and does enough to make me want to see the movie. 3 stars here as I don't yet know whether the movie really is good or bad. Will report back later, fans! ... More

The story was rather standard and dull: underdog is chosen to lead against overpowering evil man to help save mankind, but the visuals definitely made this film. 'The Fall' is astoundingly beautiful, and it's great to see what Tarsem Singh has done with a bigger budget and created another gorgeous film with the costumes and sets, and the 3D actually added to the effect, though it might not have been needed. Overall, a decent film. can't wait for Tarsem's Snow White (and more of Henry Cavill!) ... More

RE: my 2 cents

It's brutal enough as it is! I actually enjoyed this a lot, the story didn't really do anything for me but the action was terrific. No over-reliance on hyper editing and supershort shots to try and make an exciting action scene, some of the takes were actually quite long with plenty of sword swinging and body flipping/twirling etc going on in the frame. I wish more directors would pay attention to that! ... More

my 2 cents

I agree with the other commenters in this thread, I do not tend to slag off other reviewers opinions and such, as at the end of the day, people should not rely on just one reviewers opinion of a film to judge its quality. However my main problem with this review, is that the only points it made were in relation to other films made by the director, neither of which I have seen, therefore I am unable to make a connection between the negative issues described in those films. This is, of course, no... More

Empire - To be called the biggest movie magazine in the country, it's a bit mystifying as to why you would write 3 long sentences on a blockbuster movie of this standard. I always thought that with every film there should be an extremely long review but with this, all the readers of Empire could have written this review, even if some of us don't have a degree in journalism! My point is: I would love to have read a longer review of this movie rather than below standard review from a movie web... More

RE: RE:

To be fair, having just seen the film there's really not much that can be said about it anyway since it is so empty. Shallower than a puddle, though the fight scenes are well done and I couldn't agree more about the last sentence in the 'review'. I'd never seen Cavill in anything before, but I think they appear to have made a great choice for Superman. ... More

RE: RE:

The reason is that it is a small review is that when the next issue of Empire comes out, the film will have been out for weeks and therefore not merit much more of a comment. Happens all the time. ... More

RE:

Cant find the link to click for the full review?!?!? OH! Hang on! Thats it? One of the best things about Empire is the reviews, even if i dont always agree with them fully. Having said that they are mostly informative, well written and cover all the bases. What happened here? There was another review recently - which i forget cos .... well.... cos it was just as tiny .... so i forgot which movie. But it was an Empire review, like this one, miniscule. Cmon guys. You be better... More

RE: So whats it about again???

Is this the review that's going in the magazine? Bit short for a film like this don't you think? I'm really looking forward to seeing Cavill as Superman - I just hope the review doesn't go: S'alright! It starts, he fly's, it ends. The suit looks good though! ... More
