Resident Evil: Afterlife
Alice takes on the zombie apocalypse again

submit to reddit

Plot
Alice continues her quest to find other survivors of the zombie apocalypse cause by the evil Umbrella Corporation. But the nefarious leaders of the company are on her trail and set a trap for her.

Review
The same again, in 3D. Paul W.S. Anderson, who directed the first film but only produced the last two, is back at the helm, and Milla Jovovich reprises her role as zombie-killing warrior babe Alice. It’s mostly set in a zombie-besieged prison in post-apocalypse Los Angeles, with the usual hard blokes, killer chicks, panicky deadweights and doomed bit-players taking hard knocks.

Anderson has a knack for uber-ridiculous, ultra slo-mo action scenes, which jolt some life into the picture, but an assembled-from-leftovers plot and dreadful speech bubble dialogue sink any involvement you might have with these drab, if buff remnants of humanity. This is ‘real D’, not a dodgy conversion job – but Anderson makes elementary mistakes with the process which suggest he got hold of James Cameron’s cameras but started shooting before he read the manuals properly.

Verdict
What fun there is to be had is undermined by drab 3D, hacked-out dialogue and rehashed plots.

In a series that deals with viral mutations, it’s pretty fitting that the fourth Resident Evil, a film that found its routes in the sort of humble zombie/ mad scientist territory, is practically mutated beyond recognition. And when is mutation ever really a good thing? Told like a story translated into French, Japanese, back to English, and finally into GGAAAAKEEERFLLLAAARGH, it’s a bloody patchwork of action movie cliches, clunky dialogue and more slow motion than you can shake a... More

RE: oh dear

easily the best "3D" I've seen since Avatar - which it should be as they used the same camera system as was designed for Avatar - which makes a nice change to all the cr*ppy "converted" 3D films hitting the cinemas to cash in on the fad... the only dodgy effect was on the plane that alice was flying after the start, the scale looked completely wrong against the huge landscape backdrops and the plane looked almost transparent in places! the film itself? not bad, not great, kinda averag... More

oh dear

Not as awful as some have made out, but there are some terrible elements to it. I didn't think the 3D was too bad, and two bits of totty as leads didn't go down too badly either. I thought the biggest let down was in the last five minutes...(SPOILERS).....the guy who couldn't die, even after an explosion that took out a chunk of a city, and the last scene where they left you with a daft cliff-hanger when you KNOW they won't make another of these. The director and writers sadly had very bad da... More

RE: Resident Evil: Afterlife

SPOILERS.. Watched this last night and thought it was great mindless fun.A huge improvement on the utterly boring third instalment.Hot babes, big guns, gory deaths.I was satisfied. Wentworth Millers first scene locked up HAD to be a Prison Break gag.He even came up with the plan for escapingoved to see the appearance of the axeman from Resi 5,ditto the final fight with Wesker and the Jill Valentine cameo. A high 3 stars from me. ... More

L: simonmckergan1 What a film, it takes story telling and acting to another level.  The tension in some of the scenes was unbelievable.  A classic of the genre.  The use of slow motion was a bold stroke, adding literally 30 minutes more to this "classic".  And an ending that begs for more!  I jest of course.  A piece of shit.  Avoid. :D]] ... More

Sad Panda

Well Resi 5 the film is go. p; It really is a sad state of affiars tha the games have a better story and make more sence than the nonsensical crap Anderson has turned the films into. Just tossing villians and heros from all of the games.   I don't mind 1 and 3. They were OK films.  2 was utter crap, one of the most badly directed and edited films ever(even worse than Padnorum.) 4 was just dumb. And not even dumb fun.   In a year when Inception showed us that action... More

RE: Resident Evil: Afterlife

It's the largest opening for the series, took $10 million in the US. It's expected to have a domestic opening weekend of about $28 million. Budget was $60 million, and it's bound to make a pretty penny over seas too. I expect a sequel will be announced tomorrow morning ... More

RE: Are you kidding me.

Have to go along with MoBiUGeArSkIn and Bozz on this one...I had an absolute blast of a time watching this on Friday as did the packed audience I saw it with. The 3D just makes all the action scenes that more fun and engaging, with each set piece hitting all the right adrenaline buttons. The added bonus of Anderson letting go and throwing everything he wants at the screen just made the whole thing a great rollercoaster ride. I've heard people complain that its just a rip off of the Matri... More

RE: Are you kidding me.

L: Death_Row_Marv Apart from the Collector, this is the worst film this year. 2 stars is kind to this film. Awful. This wants to be the Matrix so bad it is not even its own film. Worst of the bunch. Agent Wesker, Agent Smith no sorry just Wesker follows ever single mannerism of Hugo Weaving. The fight scenes are boring and so stupid. The talky bits are so wooden and badly acted. The only kind words I can say is the 3D is OK. I have never been so tempted to walk out of the ... More
