I Am Love
Love and languor in Milan

Plot
The unfulfilled Russian wife of a wealthy Italian businessman, Emma Recchi (Swinton) finds her passions rekindled from an unlikely quarter.

Review
I Am Love
Tilda Swinton unleashes her diva and Italian cinema gets a powerful new voice in this operatic melodrama. Recalling Luchino Visconti’s classic The Leopard, this stars Swinton as Emma, a Russian-born woman who has married above herself into a wealthy Milanese family. Falling out of love with her stern husband, Emma embarks on a mad fling with an immigrant chef her son’s befriended.

Inevitably, her privileged world unravels... Though it drags a little, this stately film never descends into formula, using John Adams’ score to great effect and boldly utilising the flourishes of ’70s Italian genre cinema (zooms, handheld camera) to create something original, refreshing and really very moving.

Verdict
A stately, rich and moving Italian melodrama in the spirit of Visconti.

RE: RE:

Tilda Swinton plays Emma who is by birth Russian but leaves her native country to marry into a very wealthy and influential italian family. Her whole life is perfect order from the slick couture gowns she wears to the company the family keeps, until Antonio the close friend of her son enters into her life.. Wow I adored this film, gorgeous to look at from every angle and Tilda was superb,a brilliant story that completly enveloped. 4/5 ... More

RE: RE:

I really enjoyed this. Thought it was a stunningly realised film, not perfect but still a great piece if cinema; the food motif was used incredibly well, too. Swinton was great, as ever, in an incredibly subtle performance, but the rest of the cast were also good in their respective roles. One problem, the Indian American plot strand. You could argue the necessity of it, but it was over done and the character felt entirely out of place, and not in a good way. It didn't really add anything ... More
