Daybreakers
Ethan Hawke in a world full of vampires

submit to reddit

Plot
Ethan Hawke plays a vampire called Edward (steady!) in a world where almost everyone is undead. But with hardly any humans left, the blood banks are running low and starvation threatens. As starving vampires devolve and turn feral, Edward learns about a rogue group who may have a solution...

Review
Daybreakers
There’s a fascinating idea at the heart of Daybreakers, where a vampire plague has swept the world and everyone’s now a bloodsucker, but it doesn’t quite make for a fascinating film.

At its strongest when discussing the implications of that flipped population — light-secured houses, the few remaining humans farmed for blood — but weakest when it deals with plot, this sees Ethan Hawke’s compassionate vampire researcher flailing as he tries to develop a new food source for vampires threatened with starvation. A possible cure for vampirism appears instead, but with a fumbled last act and blatant appeal for a sequel, this finishes not with a bang but a whimper.

Verdict
Lots of interesting concepts competing for limited running time make for more of a TV pilot than a feature film.

Daybreakers Review

Though this film did arrive during an unfortunate glut of vampire movies, Daybreakers offers enough dark sci-fi thrills and enough of a unique twist on the genre to satisfy. ... More

The Battle for Blood... Begins!

Oh dear. Another vamp flick. That's what i first thought. I then watched it. And it completly blew my mind. Nothing could prepare you for what happens. Many vamp films are nearly all the same now. So i was suprised when i saw a vamp film covered in blood that both boasts an excellent cast and an interesting storyline. Daybreakers has gone where no other vamp film has even dreamed of. A truly stunning, breath-taking, ground-breaking yet stylistic and sophisticated vamp film that is serious. It is... More

RE:

Amazing, Ethan Hawke plays his part amazingly. Unlike any other vampire film I've seen, its a breath of fresh air since the Twilight craze. I really did enjoy this and I continue to watch it again and again since. The stephim, the ending was crap so they could make a sequel (: ... More

A DECENT VAMPIRE FLICK

After watching the sickly vamp teenage angst of the Twilight films I found it quite nice to have a more adult, gory vampire film to watch recently. A good cast including Ethan Hawke, Sam Neil and Willem Dafoe and a great idea in which humans are the endangered race in a future dominated by vampires. It wasn't faultless and did take itself a bit too seriously at times but this is nonetheless a worthwhile entry into the vampire genre. ... More

Surprised at how good it is

Great little film, and considering its basically an Aussie film with a limited budget, it makes for a good hollywood style blockbuster. Great premise and idea, and it kept me engrossed til the end. I'm all for B movie vamps and gore over sappy vamp love stories any day of the week! ... More

oh dear

I saw it at the cinema and I thought it was pretty much the worst film I have seen in years. So I rented it out on DVD as I thought maybe I was just in a bad mood that day...and it is actually worse than I remember. I actually think it is an insult to one star films to give it a one star...strange as I really do like some shit films!! (I even thought Terminator Salvation was good!!!) ... More

So-So.

Daybreakers is once more a another vampire film but this time it's more adult and very blood-thirsty. The film does have a interesting plot, okay pefomances from Ethan Hawke, Williem Dafoe and Sam Neil, some gory and violent scenes.. That's about it for the postive side. The negatives is the ending, it's screaming for a sequel and sometimes the film seemed rushed to get to the finale. I wouldn't say it was terrible or brilliant, just so-so. ... More

Could've been better, but I liked it. I was beginning to think that the vampire might be running out of stories, but I found a lot of the ideas in this movie were interesting and I would've liked to have seen them developed more, particularly the devolved vamps. All of the performances were fine, particularly Dafoe who chewed out some amusing dialogue, and aside from a couple of dodgy bits of CGI the effects were decent. I really wish horror films would stick to more practical effects, they're m... More

Themes shine through an otherwise average movie

This vampire film really surprised me, as I was expecting your typical modern horror film with bland characters and lazy directing. While these faults can still be seen somewhere on the horizon, the Spierig Brothers's writing mixes a number of themes into the interesting premise which will have you thinking after the credits roll. Ethan Hawke and Sam Neill, among others, turn in good performances and manage to deal with their rather one-dimensional characters. But be warned, as Daybreakers is a... More

RE: Daybreakers

I enjoyed this film when I saw it a few weeks ago. It has a good clear vision and an interesting story which is good to see with the mass influx of vampire related movies. It has some startlingly gory moments (people get ripped apart Zombie movie-like rather than the usual Vampire-movie) and builds tension well. Hawk and Defoe are solid and deliver rounded performances while not really stretching themselves, but its Sam Neill who has a bit of fun as the evil corporate boss. The Spie... More

After a year when vampires where made lacklustre and kiddie friendly, how refreshing to see a film that gives vampires back to the adults. In a world where 95% of the population are vampires, the supply of natural blood is running out and the hunt for a synthetic substitute is failing. What puts this head and shoulders above the toothless competition is the attention to detail and the invention of the vampire population as a nether world version of our own. The final 20 minutes also pushes the 1... More

RE: Lame

I agree with Dr Lenera and SpiderBat...while the idea was interesting the plot was not developed enough to sustain the film.  I got quickly bored with it.   The script definitely needed more developing especially the human characters who were so dull.  I loved the vampires - Sam Neil and the actor who played Ethan Hawkes brother were excellent.     ... More

RE: Lame

The premise of vampires ruling the world and there being so few humans left for them to feed on is a solid one. However, after a while the film settles into a series of mediocre chases and fights and becomes rather ordinary. By the time the end appraoches it's become obvious that they had trouble sustaining the story and were not sure how to end things, although this is no I Am Legend, it does just about keep one interested and also has a huge amount of gore for a 15 rating, with exploding b... More
