Red Dawn
Finally crash lands

submit to reddit

Plot
When North Koreans start landing in their small town, US Marine Jed Eckert (Hemsworth) and his friends take the fight to the invader.

Review
Red Dawn
Playing its dunderheaded premise (evil Asians invade America!) confoundingly straight, this remake of a best-forgotten ’80s actioner limps into UK cinemas after flopping in the States. On the one hand, it’s cravenly cynical: the nationality of the villains was switched from Chinese to North Korean in post-production, so as not to offend a major market. On the other, it’s leadenly humourless, ramping up the Big Speeches and shaky-cam like it’s Saving Private Ryan 2. The only relief from the tedium: spotting digitally de-Chinesed shots, and the array of accidental innuendo (“Stay on my ass!”/“I won’t give you dick!”).

Verdict
Long-delayed. Arguably not long enough.

Red Yawn

Not quite as bad as Empire suggests but not that great either. It takes the original and then just does it again, adds nothing and doesn't even seem to be trying. If you are going to remake a poor film then why remake it as another poor film? ... More

RE: Red Dawn

If there is a more irritating, punchable character on film this year than Josh Peck in this, I'll eat my shoes. He seems to have based it on Adam Sandler's Little Nicky, only more annoying (if that's possible). As for the film, not truly terrible, but a massive missed opportunity. None of the kids apart from Thor & Tyra from Friday Night Lights make much of a positive impression & it ends just as it gets going. Were they really expecting sequels? ... More

RE: Red Dawn

Red Dawn is better than Taken 2 because shit actually happens in Red Dawn. I just found it dull, then again, I don't think much of the original either. ... More

RE: Red Dawn

I actually didn't think it was ] bad, briskly paced with some decently staged set-pieces and one or two likeable characters, got pretty much what I expected from it. Chris Hemsworth is always watchable as well, although they'd have been better casting Hutchinson as his brother instead of Peck, who was fucking awful. Put it this way, I enjoyed it more than Taken 2, The Expendables 2 and the latest Die Hard flick, which I admit is probably a sorry indicator for the state of the modern action... More

RE: Red Dawn

Even worse than the dreadful original. Racist, xenophobic, ludicrous concept, dull, badly acted, crappy SFX, hypocritical, fascist propagandistic bilge. 0% ... More

RE:

Dawn (2012) Ah the long awaited and eagerly anticipated remake of the now completely dated and historic original...yes I'm being sarcastic. Luckily ] is the main character here so that should be good right?...no wait, oh. Unfortunately remaking the original film was utterly pointless, completely and totally a waste of time, its as if a bunch of people just had nothing much to do and HAD to remake something. So they just thought e'll just remake 'Red Dawn', we can blow lots of shit up in ... More

RE: Red Dawn

I loved the original and had very low expectations for this. It was better than I thought it would be and you have to take it for what both this one and the original are, easy watching actions films. There's cheesy speeches as expected but plenty of action to make up for it. Not a great film but not awful either. ... More
