35 Shots of Rum
Parisian domestic drama avec game.

Plot
The family dynamic between a father and daughter is altered with the arrival of another in her life.

Review
35 Shots of Rum
Harking to Ozu's genius for capturing the rythyms of the everyday, Claire Denis celebrates the often-overlooked traits of trust, acceptance and love in this exquisite domestic drama. Indeed, taciturn widower Alex Descas and student daughter Mati Diop are so attuned that they rarely need to speak to communicate and their relationships with tenement neighbours prove just as intuitive. It's not all harmony - both train driver Descas and cabby Nicole Dogue have their secrets, while Gregoire Colin struggles to express his feelings for Diop, who isn't quite sure where her life is heading. With Agnes Godard's subtle imagery making the mundane seem reassuring, this has a quiet confidence to match its compassion.

Verdict
Superbly played and realised, this stays with you.

Just seen the film, and absolutely loved it. The scene with Nighshift by The Commodores playing was pretty much the best thing I've seen in a cinema all year. Film of the year thus far from me. ... More
