Sex and the City 2
Actually, practically no sex and a completely different city

submit to reddit

Plot
The ‘perfect’ lives of the four New York friends are still proving troublesome, so when they’re offered a luxury holiday in Abu Dhabi, they jump at the chance. But as their relationships continue to falter in a foreign land, their dream holiday may prove more of an adventure outing.

Review
Sex and the City 2
The first Sex And The City movie suffered from a rather mean-spirited plot that undid the happy endings of the series finale in order to put them back together in two hours. This second film improves on that immeasurably, as regards its central quartet at least, offering them a chance to grow and change. The problem is everything else.

So what’s up with the ladies who lunch? Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Big (Chris Noth) are rocking as their expectations of married life begin to diverge; Samantha (Kim Cattrall) is fighting ever harder against the aging tide; Charlotte (Kristin Davis) is questioning her ability to become a domestic goddess, and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) is suffering under a sexist boss at work.

In other words, they’re all experiencing recognisable, real-life dilemmas (albeit while wearing fantastical outfits), and there are moments of beautifully played, compassionate character drama. Like her or loathe her, Parker bounces off the quieter Noth perfectly in their scenes, while Nixon and Davis share a standout barroom confessional that’s almost moving, even if Cattrall’s Samantha continues on her mission to shag everything in sight.

The problem is the setting. An outré gay wedding opens the film and sets a barmy tone (Liza Minnelli growling her way through Single Ladies on a set straight out of Top Hat. Really), but it’s when the quartet head to Abu Dhabi that things get weird. Cultural stereotypes are the order of the day, and for every instance of well-written and borderline acceptable culture shock there’s a moment of uncomfortable naivety. Even an indirect suggestion that the position of women in the Middle East can be improved by a rousing chorus of I Am Woman, or that wearing the burkha is basically okay because there are designer togs under it, is insensitive to the point of offensiveness. It’s cultural blindness not only towards the women of the UAE, but also to the feminist bent that the show always claimed for itself.

Verdict
This feels bigger and more cinematic than the first film, and sees a progression in the lives of the characters. But many of the jokes are beyond broad, and the Middle Eastern stereotypes are shockingly cack-handed.

oh dear oh dear

For the first 20 minutes this is just about the most horrific thing I've ever seen. The "quieter" scenes are more enjoyable, but the movie can best be summed up as: Carrie Bradshaw & co need to grow the fuck up. ... More

What sex and the City?

I am a diehard Sex and the City fan and loved the first film. It was just like the fabulous TV series and tied up all the loose ends. This car crash of a film was just appalling. It was upsetting to watch and quite frankly cringeworthy in parts. There was absolutely no chemistry between the four leading ladies and the plot was not existent. Kim Cattrell just is getting way to old to be going to bed with 20 something men and it just wasn't funny. If they do make number 3 lets hope they learn from... More

for what it is, it wasn't too bad..

given that with the 'sex and the city' films, you have to go in with expectations of a girly, non serious....story.... characters with little depth... plot centured around things like fashion, money and men.... this film wasn't terrible. i'm not a sex and the city fan particularly....and i thought the first film was poor.... but some of the scenes in the second film did manage to make me laugh... such as the scene's with Samantha in the market in Abu Dabi haha. if you don't go to see it expect... More

Terrible

I have no problem with chick flicks, escapism is part of film watching but this...bleugh, i liked the first one, it kept (mostly) true to the SATC series. As for a moving talk between Charlotte and Miranda??? I think not. Can't cope?... with a nanny (who conveniently turns out to be gay), not going out to work but with bags of money (not the be all but does help!) and wearing designer outfits in the kitchen. This film sets women's lib back years. Very disappointing. ... More

Slated too Much.

I think people are forgetting what films like this are all about, just frothy, girly fun. Some bits in it are very funny, yes i do agree some sterotypes are harsh, but the film is not bad, go see it with girlfriends. This coming from a guy. ... More

It's a nauseatingly inappropriate film in many ways but I still think you can see some of the original SATC in there somewhere. And they ALWAYS cared more about clothes and shoes than the real world. RE: Good, not great!

L: dayglowjoe but it is a well known fact that a lot of middle eastern women do wear glamourous clothes under their burkhas. Granted only richer women probably and i countries with less strict regimes, but it is not such a ridiculous revelation as some people have said. ell for me it is, especially in a country like Abu Dhabi, from where did you get this information? ... More

RE: Good, not great!

everyone is saying how offensve the ending of the abu dabhi section was, granted it was done a very cheesy overly simplified way, and you can not make such a complex issue that black and white, but it is a well known fact that a lot of middle eastern women do wear glamourous clothes under their burkhas. Granted only richer women probably and i countries with less strict regimes, but it is not such a ridiculous revelation as some people have said. Good, not great!

I saw it last night. They have managed to turn SATC into a standardised chick flick. It's like SATC-lite. The opening 30mins is gayer than the majority of my queer cinema collection and borderline offensive in that its campness is ever so patronising, including the discussion about getting married but agreeing to cheat!! WTF!! The scenes in Abu Dhabi feel cliched, e.g. the burkha escape, and the ending is so rushed that it's a case of blink and you'll miss it. There are some very good scenes bet... More

Not Tonight

The original tv series was fresh and funny and at times, genuinely ground-breaking. The first film wasn't bad and was at least watchable. This is horrible! The script is an absolute clunker and the scenes in Abu Dabi borderline offensive. The whole thing plays like a sub-standard 'Carry On' film. I'm a fan - but avoid this! ... More

Come on guys and gals - don't rate a film you haven't seen, that's just stooopid. hile yes, you have to see a film before you judge it, but also, if something looks shit, what came before it was shit, what came previously that thing was also shit, and it is still made by the same people who made all that shit, and all the suspicions of this also being shit seem... More

Let's milk this cash cow dry

I liked the first film so much I bought the DVD and still enjoy watching it. I was alarmed to hear they were making a second as you know how badly wrong these things can go (Transformers 2 anyone?). I saw SATC2 last night hoping it would be better than the reviews suggested. It wasn't. There were likable moments but over all it was just silly and took every stereotype as far as possible to the point of being offensive. Needless to say I won't be buying the DVD. I'll give it 2 stars just becaus... More
