Tim Burton

submit to reddit

You see “Cahiers du Cinéma” and you expect there’s a good chance things may get navel-gazey, but this examination of the career of Tim Burton, which bears the French publication’s name, is near ludicrous in its minute analysis and frilly sentencing. There’s no questioning Antoine de Baecque’s knowledge and passion for his subject, but he stretches too far in trying to bolt an intellectual subtext to every decision Burton makes. It completely loses all sense of reality in a chapter trying to argue Burton as a political filmmaker, which is a bit like lauding Michael Bay as a feminist.
