If Connery doesn’t get an Oscar nomination for this one, then it’ll be one of the biggest awards snubs of the year, for this is the best film he’s done for ages. Although it’s familiar territory, Van Sant gives the material a new spin and the result is off-beat, low-key and guaranteed to lift spirits with its easy charm.
