State and Main

Plot A Hollywood Film unit invades a quaint, small town in Vermont, where the appetites of a heartthrob leading man Bob provoke a confrontation that threatens to halt production. Timid screenwriter Joe is caught between his budding romance with local idealist Ann, and the pressure form director Walt and producer Marty to save the movie. Verdict Terrifically funny and smart, with the entire ensemble firing on all thrusters. More evidence that Hoffman has awesome range, that Macy is a treasure, and that Mamet as a filmmaker just gets better and better at telling a good story of juicy dialogue and sound structure with snappy dispatch and distinctive personal style. A treat and a must-see for anyone who loves the movies - but knows they’re only movies.
