Farewell My Concubine Controversial film about the relationship between two male performers in 1920's China.

Plot Following the lives of two Chinese boys as they grow up in the early 20th century, learning to be performers in their beloved opera house. As the two mature one falls in love with the other, who then goes on to marry a woman, but despite this their friendship remains strong, with the opera they perform echoing their real lives. Verdict Sharing the Palm D'Or at that year's Cannes, Farewell My Concubine is the emotional story of two childhood friends who grow up as apprentices in their much-loved opera house. With stunning set pieces and the dramatic backdrop of the revolution, Kaige captures perfectly the relationship between the two boys.
