Japan, 1860s. Ex-hitman Kenshin Himura (Satô) is settling into a new life as a peaceful wanderer when he learns of a drug gang's plans to take over a school and use it to export their products. Taking up his sword again, he resolves to defend the teachers and pupils from the menace.
There's some fun action sequences and plenty of badass swordplay to pass the (seriously long) run time, but the simplistic plotting and characters mean that it all wears a little thin.
