1930s Germany. Young Liesel Melinger (Nélisse) is sent to live with foster parents Hans (Rush) and Rosa Hubermann (Watson) by her communist-sympathising mother. As she grows up, she tries to make sense of the constantly worsening situation as the grip of the Nazis on everyday German life takes hold.
Some good performances, impeccable craft and good intentions can’t compensate for a lack of dramatic urgency and emotional heft. The Book Thief is effective, but not effective enough.
