Arriving in Le Havre from Tonkin, army deserter Jean hopes to jump a ship to Venezuela. But, despite being left the means to escape by suicidal painter, Michel, his fate is sealed when he becomes involved with Nelly and her murderous guardian Zabel and his gangster crony, Lucien.
Not a cheerful evening's viewing, this, but a superb and compelling example of melancholic realism.
