EMPIRE ESSAY: Gremlins (15) Plot A loveable but mysterious exotic pet brought home from Chinatown becomes the source of a slew of miseries for an American suburb when the "Mogwai's" owners disobey a few basic precautions and help spawn a host of evil creatures. Verdict Taken together, Gremlins and Gremlins 2: A New Batch (1990) represent something unique in the horror-comedy pantheon: part affectionate tribute to filmic flim-flam, part sneaky satire, all anarchic comedy. Both films invite and implore identification with the perps rather than the victims.
