Cinderella Man Crowe packs a punch in this moving drama with multi-Oscar potential

Plot Caught in the grip of the Depression, one-time boxing contender Jim Braddock (Crowe) is forced to support his family — wife Mae (Zellweger) plus kids — by working in a dockyard. When his former manager, Joe Gould (Giamatti), gets him a lucrative break as deadmeat for a heavyweight challenger, it kickstarts one of the most remarkable career revivals in sporting history. Verdict It may not boast an original bone in its battered body, but Cinderella Man delivers old-fashioned, Shawshank Redemption-style entertainment. Particularly worth seeing for Crowe’s muscular, sensitive, towering turn. The Best Actor Oscar race starts now.
