Resident Evil

submit to reddit

When a virus turns all the workers in a corporation’s HQ into ravenous zombies, a team of commandos must stop it spreading. But they didn’t expect a homicidal super-computer or a strange amnesiac woman, Alice.

Tomb Raider’s box office aside, computer game movies have had it tough. Double Dragon? Dross. Street Fighter? Dreck. Super Mario Bros.? Drossy dreck. Still, when Paul Anderson, a man equally adept at horror and videogames, signed on to direct Capcom’s zombie-fest classic, Resident Evil, a slam-dunk seemed assured. Emphasis on “seemed”.

On the surface this is Resident Evil: The Game writ large, complete with a hoary race-against-time plot, puzzles that wouldn’t tax the average two year-old, atrocious dialogue, Gameboy-level CG, creatures galore (hail the zombie dogs!) and extravagantly bad acting. Trouble is, it’s not a terribly good movie, with incoherent plotting and action scenes, and not one iota of the game’s spooky atmosphere (nor plot).

It also, predictably, suffers from the lack of interactivity. There’s nothing as frustrating as watching characters who’ve obviously never seen a zombie movie waste bullets by shooting the mothers in the chest, when you know to aim for the cranium.

If the zombies were up to scratch, much could be forgiven. However, a few feeble homages to George A. Romero aside, Anderson is clearly unwilling to follow in the guru’s bloody footsteps, relying on suggestion, not schlock.

Not only is the result less gory than its progenitor, but the zombies here resemble something Tom Savini could knock up in a lunch break.

It’s no surprise when Anderson resorts to desperate measures to snag the teenage boys who are Resident Evil’s lifeblood. Suffice it to say, this involves Jovovich’s effective heroine, very little clothing, even less dignity, and a beaver shot gratuitous enough to make Sharon Stone blush. Now you don’t see that in the games.

Game fans will be disappointed. Zombie fans will be disappointed. Paul Anderson’s fan will be disappointed. If you want scary, boot up your games console.

RE: Resident Evil Review

Resident Evil (2002) There was much trepidation when this came to bloom way back in 02, an adaptation of the highly popular zombie horror videogame franchise? hmmm. Anderson's first foray into the adaptation world after some reasonable films like 'Soldier' and 'Event Horizon', his CV didn't look too shabby but previous attempts at this sort of genre proved dismal. Amazingly enough this first offering in what is now an overly ridiculous 'Matrix' 'Blade' 'Underworld' monster mash mess i... More

So, the critic says...

That Anderson relies on suggestion rather than shock and will not follow in Romero's footsteps. And it gets 2 stars. Yet any other review would commend a film that ISN'T full of shocks and which relies on and properly uses suggestion. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. And honestly, people need to start giving Anderson a harder time for the same fucking ending he has been using for 15 years, outside of Soldier and Death Race. You know, the sequel begger one. ... More

Resident evil kind of?

The film has a great ending, and the beaver shot is nice, aside from that this film sucks ass juice. it's an embarresment to gamers who loved the creepiness of the games (you will be dissapointed). its an insult to romeros creatures (zombies are crap in this cackfest) There is no blood, no plot, no point. a wasted opportunity to do something brilliant with the best survival horror game franchise. Paul W.S. anderson should be ashamed for writing such a shitfest. ... More

Bad dialouge have you seen Serenity, Bad acting have you seen Battlefeild earth, also whats wrong with a movie that is'nt too gory your a critic not QT, plus it was a low budget movie, and as for Milla Jovovich in the red dress, its a homage to Ada from one of the games, and some of the best movies made have'nt had plots either. ... More

im a huge fan of capcoms RESIDENT EVIL games franchise. so it was with high hopes i read that GEORGE A ROMERO was going to direct the movie version of the game. that was 1998. Nothing happened. Finally RESIDENT EVIL was in the theaters and it was with much disgust i found that it was directed by schlock master PAUL W S ANDERSON and the film bore little resembalance to the game series it was based on. Bloodless spineless PG13 pap for none game fans. what a let down. to compound my misery i got ... More

It was too good to be true

The sheer thought of a faithful movie adaptation of the classic 1996 survival horror video game is just awesome, too awesome? Apparently so. What we get is something that couldn't be any more different. It's good, but should be better. Instead of a slow burning, tense, mansion based, zombie epic we are given some kind of futuristic, comic book which concentrates only on 'babes with guns' and special effects. It could have been more, but that's not saying it's entirely a bad thing. In some ways ... More
