Reuniting The Rubins
A private dysfunction

Plot
Lenny (Spall) is the brooding patriarch at the head of a squabbling family at Passover time. Under the orders of overbearing mother (Blackman), he sets about bringing his feuding family to order.

Review
Reuniting The Rubins
Another domestic drama that would like to be of the nuanced, life-affirming East Is East/Little Miss Sunshine school of dysfunctional family dramedy. At the epicenter of this household’s burden is jaded Jew Lenny (Timothy Spall), who reunites his feuding children for Passover on the orders of his battleaxe mother (Honor Blackman). As with the adored families of previous indie hits, the Rubins have their share of relative nutjobs. Unlike those units, however, the Rubins lack oomph. A bit of chemistry, some observational subtleties and a few witty lines wouldn’t go amiss in a Passover tale that spends so long looking for its ingredients it forgets to rise.

Verdict
As dysfunctional movie families go, the Rubins hardly linger in the memory.
