Some Came Running
Sinatra's back in town...

Plot
Dave Hirsch, a writer and army veteran, returns to his hometown, to find it awash with scandal and good time girls. His sensible, successful brother wants him to settle down with local teacher Gwen, but Dave's ex Ginny and newfound gambling partner Bama have other ideas.

Review
Some Came Running

Rat Pack cast, check. Writer of From Here To Eternity, check. Visually exacting director, check. Instant classic, missing. Soldier and novelist Dave Hirsch (Sinatra) returns to his small hometown and the life he despised. Trailed by a colourful floozy (MacLaine), he falls for a straight laced teacher, but local gambler Bama (Martin), threatens to lure him back his old ways. Sinatra is comfortable as the displaced bad boy with a heart of gold, but it is hard to understand why Ol’ Blue Eyes would fall for hard-nosed Martha Heyer over MacLaine’s kooky cutie. Struggling under the weight of the sum of its seemingly great parts, it is obvious why this is the least watched of the Rat Pack classics. Some Came Running is stylish, but the plodding story inhibits the smooth sophistication of Sinatra, Martin and MacLaine.

Verdict
Stylish enough, but the plodding story inhibits the smooth sophistication of the film's stars.
