The War On Democracy (TBC)

The War On Democracy
Plot
Documentary with journalist, John Pilger, taking on the thorny issue of the US in Latin America.

Review

Veteran journalist John Pilger does for the US’ relationship with Latin America what Michael Moore did for its gun obsession in this extraordinary documentary. America’s notions of democracy come across as Orwellian; and, while some animals may indeed be more equal than others, someone clearly forgot to tell the Latin countries.

Pilger’s fondness for shots of himself at times detracts from engaging interviews, but his passion and research pay off superbly. Footage and analysis of the 2002 coup against Venezuela’s Hugo Chávez, and studies of the small towns and people under the shadow of capitalism elsewhere, make for gripping viewing.

Verdict
A brilliantly-researched and sometimes shocking insight into the democratic position of those countries whose dealings with America are more along the lines of slave than political poodle.

The BS re our fight for other people's 'democracy'
Empire User Rating

You only have to have the slightest inclination to look at world events to know that the intervention of western powers in the name of 'democracy' is a cover for protecting national interests and empire. Iraq is only the latest, freshest example. This was an excellent documentary which provided an alternative view with facts to back it up and more content than most can handle. See the film. Verify the facts yourself. The powerful are rarely benevolent. They don't need to be. The United States is... Read More

Simply Superb
Empire User Rating

I Watched this on ITV. ITV shows tons of crap. This made up for it! Quite frankly, one of the best examinations of US policies and hypocrisies you are ever likely to see. If you want to know why the War On Terror is utter bull, watch this movie. Watch as rich elites - backed by the US - plot to assassinate, torture, rape and execute the poor and vulnerable. Watching this film had the same effect on me as watching 9/11 happen live on telly: I felt sick in my stomach. Most Americans wi... Read More

Talking exclusively to American government officials, including agents who reveal for the first time on film how the CIA ran its war in Latin America in the 80s, Pilger argues that true popular de... Read More

Judging by the film's official site, it's hardly showing anywhere. Including the whole of Scotland. As for Pilger, are you saying he is i] to point out the ... Read More
