In Hollywood, the story of Troy Duffy — the Boston bartender personally endorsed by Miramax honcho Harvey Weinstein, who gave him huge publicity and a $1 million deal — has become legend. On the verge of fame and fortune as a writer-director, and also with his band, The Brood, Duffy then let his big mouth and even bigger ego start destroying everything that others had made possible for him. Though originally commissioned by Duffy to chart his ‘rise to the top’, this instead shows him crashing and burning. The figure of Duffy so dominates Overnight that it makes discussion of the cinematic craft of the film almost irrelevant. Without a doubt it is a competently made and well-observed documentary, but the real pleasure here is watching the detestable egotist get exactly what he deserves.
Verdict
Enjoyable because you get to see a huge ego and shameless publicist get his comeuppence.
