Snakes On A Plane
Didja read the title? It's about snakes...on a plane!

submit to reddit

Plot
FBI agent Neville Flynn (Samuel L. Jackson) escorts a key witness (Nathan Phillips) on a night flight from Hawaii to Los Angeles. A crimelord arranges for assorted venomous snakes to get loose on the plane, which has been doused with a pheromone that makes the reptiles especially aggressive.

SoaP will go down in history for generating pre-release buzz on the strength of its title alone. Seriously anticipated in Z-picture circles and hidden from spoilsport critics who might undermine its opening weekend, it’s the sort of picture you’ll either queue all night in the rain to see twelve times or avoid like a Wayans Brothers Retrospective for the rest of life.

Here are some of the problems. It stars Samuel L. Jackson as the standard issue exasperated FBI guy who gets to talk tough and sorely wastes Julianna Margulies as the flight attendant who is about to jack it in and Anchorman's David Koechner as a smarmy pilot. But the entire supporting cast of snakebit passengers and crew consists of bland people who bring nothing to the picture. Like too many modern creepy-crawly films, it relies on CGI for its menaces – which gives the attack scenes a video game look that gets old very quickly. And, as befits a film rewritten and reshot to give fans what they said they wanted, it’s choppy as hell and offers no surprises.

But it does have snakes. On a plane. White-knuckle fliers will be jolted as the tone veers from improbable gangster business to horror-by-beast shenanigans before going with vintage Airport unlikeliness as an unlikely hero has to land the jet. Which is all very well, but it is by no means the giddy delight that the fans hoped for.

Verdict
Okay, but not as likeable as, say, Piranha, Tremors, Slither, Anaconda, Eight-Legged Freaks or the 1973 TV movie Horror at 37,000 Feet.

RE: Snakes On A Plane

SPOILERS ABOUND!!!   Film journalists hate it when they don't get to see a film before the rest of us. They usually spit the dummy and claim that it's because the film is awful and they don't want bad reviews, while the truth is that press screenings cost money, and some movies just don't need them. SOAP is one of those movies.   The instigation of 'cult' status before the film had even been released was a clever move on the part of the publicists, because the only thingy... More

RE: gotta lov them snakes

L: Donella I may view, NOT the best film of the Summer..by a LONG way! sp; I'll have to disagree with you there, considering the disappointing movies we've had this summer it's at the top for me!!   I really enjoyed it, but then again i like this sort of thing when it's done well, which it was. 4 stars!! I really liked the characters, I thought they were well done. ... More

RE: gotta lov them snakes

ype was unjust and it turely was a b/c moive. Yes if you sit and watch and don't think EVER! about what you are watching then its an good (ish) film. If you have ever since Scream or any Hollywood horror/slasher film then you can see/pick the plot whole out for miles. the  snake vision was a little bit cool and Sam Jackson rocks but it wasn't enough to save this film. I may view, NOT the best film of the Summer..by a LONG way! ... More

As Cool As A King Cobra And As Much Bite As A Black Mamba

Lo and Behold the stupidest words ever to grace the pages (or web pages) of Empire: "Okay, but not as likeable as... Anaconda." Yes dear friends we are gathered here today to mourn the passing of Kim Newman's credibility as a film critic. Never have we seen such a travesty of bad taste enter the realm of this otherwise superior magazine since some deluded fan-boy gave "Attack of the Clones" 5 stars (does he still work here?). RE: Snakes On A Plane

While watching the second Pirates of the Carribian and the Return of Superman as much as i thought they were good movies, they lacked one quite vital ingrediant - fun.   Snakes on a Plane has this in spades. Its a great ride - once the flight gets underway, and there are plenty of laughs, plenty of moments to cringe at (the guys will know what i'm talking about), and the odd jup-out-of-your-seat moment as well.   There was a time when i worried that the concept was better th... More

RE: Snakes On A Plane

This film has plot holes you drive a truck through, the acting (apart from the immortal SLJ) is hardly the best ever, there is just about every disaster movie convention available (the mum with baby, two young boys travelling alone, dickhead businessman) and almost every cliche possible. But............THIS FILM IS ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!!!!! I have devised a method of watching this film that worked for me...   Step 1: Buy cinema tickets, popcorn, etc Step 2: Sit down, watch trailers et... More

RE: Fuck YEAH!

Snakes on a plane 4/5 Snakes on a plane was going to go one of two ways. The first is that it would be another pathetic Samuel L Jackson movie like XXX and S.W.A.T, and sink without a trace never to be loved by geeks again. The second was for Jackson to act like we know he is capable of and produce one of the most enjoyable Blockbusters in recent years. I am glad to say that in this instance option number two wins out. Snakes on a plane is brilliant, not Oscar brilliant but if you have a... More

RE: Loved it

Saw it on Saturday after being dragged by someone staying with me. This isn't the type of movie that I would go for in a million years but the hype and the rather cheesy trailer held my interest so wasn't too sceptical when I went in. I did like it, turned my brain off for 90 mins and just enjoyed the 101 ways to kill someone by snake, and the uber-cool Mr L. Jackson who just commanded the whole thing. Thank god for his presence though as without him it wouldn't have had as much fun I think. ... More

I can say with complete honesty, this was and more than likely will be, the most hilrious and enjoyable cinema treat of the year. I loved every minute, think of every humerous way for a snake to get someone on a plane, they've got it! It's awesome, worth the hype 100%. ... More

Gloriously silly and entertaining, Snakes on a Plane manages somewhat surprisingly, to live up to the hype. A heady mix of b movie thrills and amusing social stereotypes, directed with barely concealed glee, Ellis' film will have you grinning from ear to ear. Sam Jackson is perfect, and he's clearly enjoying himself. The rest of the cast are equally good fun, gawping and shrieking gamely. Sure occasionally the mind wanders when there are no snakes around, and there are moments when the re-shoot ... More

im tired of these motherf***** snakes on this motherf****** plane

If this movie didnt have as much hype, i probably wouldnt have watched it. BUT! I thought it was like Ronseal it did exactly everything it said on the tin. There was the gruesome parts where the snakes are doing their thing, also there was a comedy element to the film which helped to break the tension. S.O.A.P is scripted basically by the internet fans who sent ideas in and this helps to make the movie. The ending where the camp as christmas steward turns out to be straight with a hot girl and t... More

Unlikely Hero

I thought the "Unlikely Hero", known to the world as former child star Kenen, was really funny. I loved how he didn't take any crap from the tower. "It's not a Video game! it's a Flight Simulator!"
