Empire's 5-Star Reviews
Sort by: Alphabetical Most Recently Reviewed
The Master (2012)
After World War II, Freddie Quell (Phoenix) is discharged from the navy and finds it hard to adjust to civilian life, becoming a rootless, drunk drifter. A chance meeting with Lancaster Dodd (Hoffman), leader of a new cult called The Cause, offers him an opportunity to change.

Excision (2012)
Teen Pauline (McCord) lives with domineering, neurotic mum Phyllis (Lords) and mild-mannered dad Bob (Bart). Her disinterest in her appearance is matched by her increasingly out-there behaviour that stems from her multiple personalities.

The Shining (2012)
Jack Torrance has writer's block, but his tactic of moving into an old hotel over winter with his wife and son brings out more than just the artistic demons in him...

Room 237 (2012)
Five Shining obsessives — a war reporter, a professor, a playwright, a musician and an author — expound their theories about Kubrick’s horror masterpiece. It’s so much better than it sounds.

Beasts Of The Southern Wild (2012)
Hushpuppy (Wallis) is a little girl who lives a semi-feral life of freedom in rundown Louisiana town The Bathtub, a place with no rules and no planning regulations. A storm floods the area, so she sets off with her sick father (Henry) on a mission to reclaim their land.

Holy Motors (2012)
Monsieur Oscar (Lavant) is picked up from his home by a stretch limo. The day-in-the-life tale that unfolds, as he travels around Paris adopting a different role in each place he visits, redefines the word ‘peculiar’.

Looper (2012)
The mid-21st century. Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is employed as a ‘looper’, a hit man who executes victims sent back from 30 years in his future, when time travel has been invented and is controlled by organised crime. When his older self (Bruce Willis) turns up as a target, he fails to carry out the hit. Both versions of Joe go on the run and try to affect their future — which involves single mother Sara (Emily Blunt), who owns the farm where the younger Joe hides out from his vengeance-seeking gang, and Sara’s telekinetic son Cid (Pierce Gagnon).

Raiders Of The Lost Ark (2012)
Renowned archeologist and expert in the occult, Dr. Indiana Jones, is hired by the U.S. Government to find the Ark of the Covenant, which is believed to still hold the ten commandments. Unfortunately, agents of Hitler are also after the Ark. Indy, and his ex-flame Marion, escape from various close scrapes in a quest that takes them from Nepal to Cairo.

The Imposter (2012)
Blending real-life testimony and dramatic re-enactments, Bart Layton’s docu-thriller revisits a 1997 US tabloid scandal that even Jeremy Kyle would have a hard time swallowing: how Frédéric Bourdin, a swarthy, 23 year-old Frenchman, conned a Texan family into believing he was their missing teenage son. Or did he?

The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
Eight years after Batman disappeared, blamed for murder, Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) is a wounded recluse, but Gotham is vibrant — until masked maniac Bane (Tom Hardy) decides it’s high time to bring the city down. Facing this new threat and mysterious cat burglar Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway), Wayne decides the Dark Knight must rise, once again.

Chariots Of Fire (2012)
Two athletes, Harold Abrahams (Cross) and Eric Liddell (Charleson), take on the establishment, their personal relationships and their inner belief to realise their dream of representing Great Britain at the 1924 Paris Olympics.

The Discreet Charm Of The Bourgeoisie (2012)
A variety of bizarre occurrences conspire to prevent the Thévenots, the Sénéchals, Madame Thévenot's lover, Ambassador Rafael Acosta, and her sister, Florence, from dining together.

Jaws (2012)
A great white shark terrorises a small US coastal resort which relies on tourist dollars... they need a hero...

The Life And Death Of Colonel Blimp (2012)
We travel through Major General Wynn-Candy's life and watch it unfold through his relationships with three different women. We see too, how his soldierly honour adapts as his personal relationship with the nature of war changes...

The Raid (2012)
Ruling Jakarta’s megaslum from a high-rise fortress, drug baron Tama (Sahetapy) is preparing to entertain some unwelcome visitors. Enter the city SWAT team, including rookie copper Rama (Uwais), armed, ready to climb, unaware that a trap’s already been set...
