While we're not sure why a noted historian or the experienced director of Fright Night could be considered rising stars, we're sure the BAFTA team know what they're doi... Hang, on who? Oooh... that makes sense. So The Impossible/Spider-Man: Homecoming's Tom Holland is actually one of the names on the BAFTA EE Rising Stars award nomination list.
The award, which spotlights up-and-coming talents in the film industry, has five names on the list this year: Holland, Ruth Negga, Laia Costa, Lucas Hedges and Anya Taylor-Joy. Noel Clarke, who himself scored the award in 2009, announced the names at a ceremony.
Holland, of course, has been making a real name for himself, hitting BAFTA's radar previously as one of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Breakthrough Brits back in 2013. He has become the latest young actor to squeeze into Spider-Man's duds, making his debut in last year's successful Captain America: Civil War. More superhero antics await in Homecoming, out on 7 July.
Negga has been seen on the likes of Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. and more recently Preacher on the small screen, but has been winning praise for her role in Loving, where she plays Mildred Loving in Jeff Nichols' latest, due here on 3 February.
Spanish actress Costa has been quietly building a body of work, but broke big in last year's Victoria, starring as a young woman lured into a world of crime and danger in the drama that won praise for being filmed in one continuous shot.
Hedges has worked with Wes Anderson, making a splash in Moonrise Kingdom and appearing in movies such as Kill The Messenger. He's currently enjoying glowing reviews for his work in Kenneth Lonergan's Manchester By The Sea, which is out in the UK on 13 January.
Finally there's Taylor-Joy, who dazzled us all in The Witch last year and followed that up with an intense performance in Morgan. She's also part of M. Night Shyamalan's new thriller Split, set for release on 20 January.
While most of the awards are decided upon by BAFTA academy members, the EE Rising Star prize is voted by the public, so head to the EE BAFTA site to vote.
