Movement on a sequel to 2014's sci-fi thriller Edge Of Tomorrow has been happening for a while now, and director Doug Liman, who made the original and plans to return for the new one, is talking up some of what we can expect, albeit in cryptic terms.

He's clearly enthused about the follow-up, which would see Tom Cruise and likely Emily Blunt back for more time-looping adventures. "That is the only sequel that I’m considering doing, and it’s because first of all the story is so amazing – much better than the original film, and I loved and loved the original film – and second of all, it’s a sequel that’s a prequel," Liman tells Collider.

The sequel currently features a script by Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse, with Christopher McQuarrie involved as a producer, so you know he, Cruise and Liman will be having input. “I’ve had some radical ideas about how to make a sequel that would interest me, in the same way that I had ideas of how you make an independent film and then Swingers came along and it was like ‘Aha, that’s the perfect movie for me to test these ideas out on,'" says Liman. "I had these intellectual ideas on how you should make a sequel that are unlike how anybody else makes a sequel, and this script and this idea fit perfectly into that idea. So it’s gonna revolutionize how people make sequels. It’s more heresy in the film world for me to pitch things that are sort of unheard of."

It'll be a while before we see anything of the new movie; both Liman and Cruise have busy schedules and they'll want to get the new Edge right before the cameras roll. But this certainly a hopeful sign. The next Cruise/Liman project to arrive will be drug-smuggling drama American Made (formerly known as Mena), which has been pushed back to 25 August next year.
