Diane Kruger Joins Robert Zemeckis' Latest

Diane Kruger

Robert Zemeckis is building quite the cast for his new project, an as-yet untitled drama based on Jeff Malmberg's 2010 documentary Marwencol. Diane Kruger is the latest to join the ensemble.

The new film will adapt the documentary, which charts the recovery of Mark Hogancamp (Steve Carell), who suffered severe brain trauma when he was beaten by five teenagers and ended up in a coma for nine days.

When he emerged, he had no memory of his life, his friends and his family. As a form of therapy, he began building a 1/6 scale model of a World War II-era Belgian village named Marwencol in his backyard, replete with figures made in the image of him, his friends, and, shockingly to some, his attackers. While the process mended his mind to a certain extent, it also let him escape into a fantasy world in which he created various scenarios with the dolls.

Leslie Mann and Janelle Monae are among those already aboard and now Kruger will join them, playing Deja Thoris, a Belgian Witch in the world of the figures. Zemeckis wrote the script with Caroline Thompson and is preparing to make the film.

Kruger had a few films on the way, including In The Fade, Butterfly In The Typewriter and JT Leroy.
