When you have a fairly standard-seeming heroine-with-a-destiny-on-a-mission-and-a-scowling-bad-guy narrative, it helps if you also have a more unique selling point. Mortal Engines boasts giant, mobile predator cities. Which is okay by us. Check out the latest trailer.

With LOTR art and effects veteran Christian Rivers in the director's driving seat, Mortal Engines was adapted by Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Phillipa Boyens from Philip Reeves' novel (the first in a series). The story is set thousands of years after civilization was destroyed by a cataclysmic event. Humankind has adapted and a new way of living has evolved. Gigantic moving cities now roam the Earth, ruthlessly preying upon smaller traction towns.

Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan), who hails from a Lower Tier of the great traction city of London, finds himself fighting for his own survival after he encounters the dangerous fugitive Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar). Two opposites, whose paths should never have crossed, forge an unlikely alliance that is destined to change the course of the future.

Hugo Weaving's on villain duty, with Jihae, Ronan Raftery and Patrick Malahide also in the cast. Mortal Engines will trundle into UK cinemas on 8 December.
