Doctor Who Xmas special

At this year's San Diego Comic-Con's Sunday panel, there was a chance for outgoing Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi to take a victory lap. And the trailer for his swan song, this year's Christmas episode Twice Upon A Time played. It's also now online.

With showrunner Steven Moffat also departing, the new episode promises to be a look at Who's history, with David Bradley playing the First Doctor, and Mark Gatiss as the Brigadier. Will anyone say, "five rounds, rapid!"? We can but hope!

Also appearing? Pearl Mackie, making a return as Bill in non-CyberBill form, likely because of the timey-wimey idea Moffat has cooked up for this one. He's dug into some familiar modern Who ideas, including the two-Doctor scenario and something going wrong that he – they – have to solve.

There's nothing from Jodie Whittaker, who takes over the TARDIS key at some point during the episode, but given that she didn't appear at the show's panel, that's not a surprise – we'll just have to be patient.

The episode will air, as you'd expect, this Christmas.
