It was never the plan for the team behind The Crown to keep its cast in place and apply swathes of make-up as the royal family ages through the years. So, for the third and fourth seasons of the series, Olivia Colman will take over for Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II.

Foy will be back for Season 2, which will arrive on 8 December on Netflix. She's been playing Queen Elizabeth since the start, charting her tumultuous early years on the throne and her marriage to Prince Philip (Matt Smith). The second season will see the family's fortunes through to the early 1960s. Colman is taking up the baton after that, for at least two seasons.

Colman is a fantastic choice to take on the role – a proven performer who has won awards for her work in the past.
