Rogue One: Michael Giacchino replaces Alexandre Desplat as composer

The changes keep coming for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but this one has the advantage of being both positive and simply due to scheduling. While Alexandre Desplat had been recruited to score the first of the stand-alone films, that job will now be handled by fellow Oscar winner Michael Giacchino.

While Desplat – who composed the music for Rogue One director Gareth Edward's Godzilla – had been attached to handle the new film's score chores, the change is schedule prompted by additional shooting on the film means he's no longer able to provide his services. Still, Giacchino (who is surely one of the busiest and best working composers) is no slouch either, having provided exceptional work for the likes of Pixar, Brad Bird and Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams. It's also more than a little exciting to contemplate what Giacchino will bring to a universe that has so far been (in the big screen live-action realm, at least) entirely crafted by John Williams. His next score to arrive will be Doctor Strange, the first Giacchino score for a Marvel movie.
