She made an impact with just a couple of scenes in Whiplash and is set to become a much bigger name thanks to scoring the title role for TV’s Supergirl, but Melissa Benoist is still finding time for indie movies. She’s signed on to star in **Lowriders.

Ricardo de Montreuil is set to direct, working from Josh Bierne-Gordon and Justin Tipping’s script for the film, which already boasts Demian Bichir, Eva Longoria, Tony Revolori, Gabriel Chavarria, Theo Rossi and Yvette Monreal in its cast.

Lowriders follows a teenager caught between his traditional father and estranged gang member brother when he enters an annual "supershow" for lowrider vehicles. Benoist will be his girlfriend, Lorelei, having won the role over the likes of Nicola Peltz and Lily Collins. It also marks her reunion with Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions, which helped make Whiplash.

Benoist will be back on the big screen in the Al Pacino-starring Danny Collins, which arrives in the UK next week.
