Funny Cow

Feeling topical despite its 1970s setting, Funny Cow finds Maxine Peake as a female comic trying to crack the male-heavy world of comedy in the North. The first trailer for the comedy drama is now online.

Peake plays the title character, a woman who has known from a young age how to make 'em laugh, but faces struggles in her personal life, including from her abusive husband. Looking to kick off a career drawing laughs in the difficult world of working men's clubs, she finds a mentor in Alun Armstrong's Lenny and the chance of new love with Paddy Considine's Angus.

It's already been drawing some positive buzz, and Peake looks to be delivering a typically great performance. With Adrian Shergold directing and Tony Pitts on script duty, the cast also includes Stephen Graham, Kevin Eldon and cameos from the likes of John Bishop and Vic Reeves.
