Teresa Palmer in Lights Out

While it seems to be successfully channelling our primal fear of nasty things lurking in the dark, the new trailer for Lights Out, James Wan's latest horror – as producer only this time – does seem to dig a little too deeply into the film's backstory and threat. So we'll leave a great big SPOILER WARNING here for anyone planning to watch the new footage.

Directed by Swedish filmmaker David F. Sandberg and adapted from his original short film with a script by Eric Heisserer, the film finds Rebecca (Teresa Palmer) dealing with what happens when her childhood fears and trauma seem to be coming back to haunt her and her little brother Martin (Gabriel Bateman). There's a creature that appears only when the lights go out, and that will do anything to make sure it gets close to them... Rebecca's safety will be tested again alongside her mother Sophie (Maria Bello) and on-again-off-again boyfriend Bret (Alexander DiPersia).

Lights Out has been drawing praise from early screenings and could be another successful horror outing touted by Wan. We'll see how it compares to his own 2016 entry, The Conjuring 2 when the movie arrives in US cinemas on July 22 before hitting the UK on August 19. Meanwhile, you can watch the original inspiration for the movie below.
