Idris Elba Confirmed For Star Trek Beyond

There has been a lot of speculation about whether Idris Elba is actually in Star Trek Beyond – although, given that Simon Pegg kept talking about him, it was all but official before now – but now we can at least answer one part. Yes, he’s set foot on the bridge of the Enterprise. Breakdanced on it, in fact.

No, he’s not playing an interstellar villain with a taste for throwing down in epic dance battles. Though we’d love to see that. In actual fact, it’s all in service of several great causes, brought together through charity donation company Omaze, which you might recall from J.J. Abrams’ The Force Awakens competition to win a walk-on role.

That’s the main prize on offer here, including the chance to appear as a background member of the crew with other offers including tours of the set and the chance to watch filming.

It’s an informal vid with the crew: no-one’s in uniform and we doubt Chris Pine’s new onscreen nickname is “Thundernuts” (we’re going to start using it, though) and you can find more details here.

With Justin Lin busy directing the third Trek outing (this was presumably completed on a day off or after shots were finished), Star Trek Beyond will be out on July 8 next year.
