Idris Elba is not just an A-list actor – he's now also a powerful producing player. And so it goes with Guerrilla, a new TV drama coming to Sky Atlantic, which sees Elba in a supporting role and shepherding the project as executive producer. Here's the first trailer.

An original drama from 12 Years A Slave writer John Ridley, Guerrilla is being pitched as a "created narrative" set in the turbulent racial struggles of 1970s London, posing the question: what if the Black Power movement in London had used violence?

Frieda Pinto and Babou Ceesay lead up the cast as politically active lovers who get swept up in activism against a racist police force. Elba plays an activist dedicated to a more pacifist approach.

“I’ve had the honour of working on both sides of the screen on this project," Elba said in a statement, "and coming back to my home town, working in East London, has made this experience, this story, even more personal. I know one thing for sure: this is a very special drama and TV is in for a treat.”

Guerrilla arrives on Sky Atlantic from 13 April in the UK, ahead of a US airing on Showtime.
