Zombies are everywhere these days – but The Girl With All The Gifts is a zombie movie hoping to stick its head above the increasing pile of bodies. Directed by Colm McCarthy (Peaky Blinders) and adapted by Mike Carey from his own novel of the same name, the first trailer has arrived today. And it’s not for the faint of heart.

In this post-apocalyptic zombieverse, the zombies are known as “hungries”, and the story revolves around one child hungry-human hybrid, played by newcomer Sennia Nanua, who may be the key to a vaccine.

Gemma Arterton plays a beleaguered teacher who befriends the young zombie, and Glenn Close plays a scientist hunting for a cure, while Paddy Considine is on military duties.

“As zombie movies go, it’s a little bit different,” Considine told us recently. “It’s essentially about nature taking over again and reinventing the human race because we weren’t quite good enough. I thought that was a cool message.”

The Girl With All The Gifts arrives in cinemas on September 9; for a full set report on the film, pick up a copy of the latest issue of Empire.
