WHY IT WILL WIN It has the epic sweep through decades of US history that proved so popular with Forrest Gump (and many other generation-spanning efforts before it), and that nostalgia / classic factor that always helps. It also boasts an A-list director and cast, groundbreaking effects in service of the plot and prestigious source material in a F. Scott Fitzgerald short story. Oh, and the film with the most nominations often wins the big prize.

WHY IT WON'T WIN It may be a little too much of a downer for some voters, what with the general obsession the film has with aging and death (Hollywood is not really a fan of either). Some of the dialogue's a bit on-the-nose as well (although that could be a strength) with shades of Gump's worse moments and the omission of a nomination for leading lady Cate Blanchett may count against it.
