WHY IT WILL WIN It's the feelgood hit of the decade, so we're told, but it's also got weight and moments of real darkness before the triumph, so voters won't feel lightweight for liking it. The young leads are likeable and sparky, the script's marvellous and the directing and cinematography spot-on. And it swept the Golden Globes and the BAFTAs. What's not to love?

WHY IT WON'T WIN Hmm, bit foreign, isn't it? Oscar voters didn't go for the similar-in-some-respects City of God, and they'll have little or no familiarity with Mumbai, the concerns the film addresses or any of the leads. The Golden Globes sweep could also hurt the film with Academy voters anxious to assert their independence.
