WHY HE WILL WIN The film is feelgood without being schmaltzy, and has enough of a background of deprivation and poverty to feel heavyweight. Boyle himself is a well-respected director, one who has a varied but interesting career, and the achievement of taking a film partly in Hindi, shot entirely in India, with narry a star in sight, and making it frontrunner gives him considerable momentum.

WHY HE WON'T WIN The Slumdog backlash has already begun, with naysayers claiming that the film indulges in "poverty porn" or presents a downbeat image of India.
