| Richard Jenkins, The Visitor |

WHY HE WILL WIN He could be the dark horse of the competition. The Visitor was largely overlooked at the box office, but this tale of a lonely widower who becomes immersed in the world of illegal immigration when he finds a couple squatting in his apartment is exactly the kind of little gem of a performance that the Academy often relishes.

WHY HE WON'T WIN While Oscar is not just a popularity contest, there is an element of familiarity for the winners in most cases. So an actor who is not a household name, starring in a film that relatively few voters would have seen, would hardly be a runaway favourite. Also, Jenkins has most recently starred in comedies, which won't help convince as to his gravitas.
