Bjork Lays An Egg (2001)
In a sea of tasteful frocks and safe suits, you have to thank the lord for people like Björk. The Icelandic oddball, nominated for a song she contributed to Dancer in the Dark, arrived dressed in a dead swan and some Nora Batty-ish tights. She then proceeded to leave golden eggs along the red carpet. For this, we love her and wish she could come back every year.

Crash Crashes The Awards (2005)
When the envelope for Best Picture was opened at the 2005 awards, it was supposed to say Brokeback Mountain. Possibly Capote. When Crash was called out, it was the biggest upset in recent Oscar memory. If you mention this win in a group of film buffs you can still kick off an argument that lasts for days.

Marty's A Smash (1977)
Trying to enliven the also-ran category of Best Live-Action Short, presenter Marty Feldman inexplicably decided to hurl the little gold bald fella at the floor, smashing it in two. As he handed it to the winners, he remarked, "It said 'Made in Hong Kong' on the bottom." The victors can't have been delighted with their two prizes for the price of one, but it made the category memorable.

How Not To Give A Speech (1998)
Helen Hunt was a lone American among four Brits in the 1998 Best Actress category. That her turn in As Good As It Gets beat Kate Winslet, Helena Bonham Carter, Judi Dench (who deserved the prize for Mrs Brown) and Helen Mirren was travesty enough. That she then made a dreadfully patronising speech calling everyone winners almost lead to war.
